French bread with a hint of onion

A reliable French-style bread machine recipe, from the Logik Stainless Steel Bread Maker instruction booklet.

Prep: 10 mins
Cook: 3 hrs 30 mins
Makes: a 700g loaf

1 tsp lemon juice
280ml lukewarm water
1.5 tbsp sunflower oil
1.25 tsp salt
1.5 tbsp caster sugar
488g strong white bread flour
1 tsp fast action bread yeast


  1. The order in which you add the ingredients to your breadmachine depends on the machine (so please check your instruction booklet). In mine, they are added in the order given. Whatever the order, the salt and yeast need to be kept separate.
  2. Choose the French bread programme if your machine has one; if not then the basic bread setting should be fine.
